A series: Shelter Signs

This sign was hung around the neck of a dog found wandering in east Dallas.
When she first stepped into the shelter through the door in my office, out of the corner of my eye, I didn’t think she was a dog. She looked like a little black sheep. So I named her Lambchop.

The back of the sign described a sad situation, which seemed to give itself away. It told a story about a single mother who “found” the dog but couldn’t afford to care for it, so she put it back outside, with this sign around its neck.

I love this picture because you can tell from the first frame what the personality contrasts are in these two dogs.
The brindle guy is in control of his body, his eyes are soft, he is patiently awaiting further instructions.
The white dog is a nut. You can see that in the first frame. In the second, you see that she is looking to the calm brindle dog to see if he is doing anything to respond to all this stimulation. By the third you see that she absolutely relies on the brindle dog for all social cues. By the forth, I am annoyed with the white dog for being such a nervous Nelly.

How to stop your cat from pissing all over your life.:

Here’s some serious advice about kitties and pee.
If you have a pet who pees in a weird way or a weird place, you’ve got to first rule out the possibility of a medical cause for the behavior. Even if you are confident your cat is “just being a dick,” you should really consult a doctor about that.
Because they’re a doctor.
And you’re probably not.
And if there is a medical reason for the jerk behavior, it could be life-threatening.

Step 0, before you can even look at step 1, is to, obviously, have your cat sterilized. I shouldn’t have to explain this, but it’s the most important thing you will ever do for your pet. Ever. Yes, ever.

Always consult your vet to rule out medical causes for weird behavior. Inappropriate urination could be indicative of something life-threatening.

1. How often are you cleaning that poop box?
Be honest. If it’s less than twice a week, c’mon, you can’t blame Mr. Fluffykins for not crawling into that suffocating box of ammonia to scratch around for a un-pottied place to potty.
If you’ve got an out-of-the-box pisser, step one is to start cleaning that thing every day, sometimes twice a day. Or after every time you hear him hop out of the box. Get yourself a Diaper Genie if that makes it easier on ya, but, srsly, you can’t possibly blame the cat if you don’t keep that thing clean.

2. What kind of box is it?
I have a giant fucking cat. (Seriously, he’s embarrassingly huge.)
He is about 21 pounds of precious kitty love. He’s an extra large cat, with a big, long tail and a big Tom cat head (even though he was neutered when he was like six months old)… But he’s also pretty obese.
And though he has never offered once, in our ten years together, to pee outside the box (not even when he was partially obstructed, he crawled into a dirty litter box to strain to pee), I can’t dream of asking Tobzilla The Big Tabby Cat to crawl into a little covered plastic bowl to do his business.

BEST LITTER BOX IMAGINABLE: A bigass Rubbermaid Storage Bin.

  You can buy them at discount stores for less than ten bucks and when they get excessively gross, you can throw them out. If you clean the litter box several times a week, a big box of scoopable cat litter will last weeks and weeks.
Which brings me to…

3. What kind of cat litter are you using?
The most common type of litter is also, research has shown, cats’ favorite. Plain ol’ generic scoopable clay litter.
That’s what I use, but my cat will pee in anything I give him. I’m just lazy and cheap, and that’s why I use generic scoopable clay litter. Also, cats prefer it, research insists.
The downside to that stuff is that it’s dusty and probably not healthy for cats to lick off of their paws. I don’t use a covered litter box, so I justify the dust that way; At least he’s not enclosed in a covered pee dome while he’s kicking up the dust. As for the toxicity of the litter itself… Eh… Sorry, kitty.

  Yesterdays News is recycled newspaper, Feline Pine is pine pellets, Schweat Scoop is wheat-based. It’s all premium & ultra safe & ultra expensive (but if you opt for Feline Pine, you can buy a cheaper version of the same product, pine pellets, in bulk at livestock supply stores), but some cats don’t like to go on it. Some cats will pee in it, but not poop, some will poop and not pee, some won’t walk on it at all, some will stress so hard over hating the way it feel under their feet that they’ll give themselves FLUTD symptoms.

  Use whatever litter your cat likes best.

4. How many boxes for how many cats?
The rule is typically one box per cat plus one. So a household with three cats requires a minimum of four boxes.
When in doubt, add a box.

5. Where are the boxes?
The laundry room, basement, garage, crawl space, or whatever other hidden away places you’ve found for the litter box could also be part of the problem. Location can upset a cat for some reason you’ll never know, but it can cause him to potty outside of the box.
If your litter box is in an out of the way place, try adding another box in a more obvious place.

6. How’s the pet vibe in general?
Does everyone get along? How many cats are sharing the space, let alone the litter box? Is a particular relationship the cat has with another pet causing the jerk behavior? Is the environment comfortable for all of the pets/How are you sure?

7. Are you a slob?
This ties into the very first question, but if you complain of your cat urinating all over your laundry, first explain why your laundry is lying out, looking like an appealing place to do business. When a litter box is dirty, it’s not weird at all for a kitty to seek out a more comfortable place to eliminate. He might also be actively trying to indicate that the litter box currently sucks.
If your apartment looks like a litter box, and the litter box isn’t very welcoming, duh, your cat is going to pee all over your life.
But remember: He can’t pee on what he doesn’t have access to!

Cats are pretty clean animals. Keeping a cat going in his litter box is so often just a matter of keeping the act of going potty comfortable and tidy for him.
Clean your litter box, make it an inviting, safe place to zip away to.

Be real, though…

Some cats, most often male cats, sometimes just won’t ever enjoy the company of other cats. And the most common way for a male kitty to express his disapproval is to pee all about it.
Unfortunately, there are some kitties who, despite perfect circumstances, just won’t fit into households with other pets. Some kitties (a rare few that you probably won’t ever be faced with anyway) just aren’t destined to be pet kitties at all. I have to believe those cats are rarer than most people think, though. With a little consideration, much cat relationship drama and resulting urine coatings on your furniture can be pretty easily resolved.

And, commonly, cats will pee all over a new boyfriend/girlfriend’s stuff when they first stay over.
This is normal.
It’s your cat telling you that he hates change and he wants you to be single your whole life.
And now you’re interested in what your cat is saying, so maybe he’s right after all.

Cat trees might help too. It’s wise to give a frustrated kitty an outlet, as well as a safe place, where he can relieve some of the tension that is currently being manifested in urine all over your life.

In general, I think cats are gracious to use the bizarre and filthy poop dens we present to them, even if they only use them a small percentage of the time. Some of the disgusting or downright batshit concepts people come up are downright torturous for kitties! In harmless effort to conceal the fact that they have a box of sand in their house in which their cat takes dumps, people will cause their kitties such torment by offering such unappealing potty options that cats will worry themselves into urinary infections, obstructions and compulsive inappropriate urination, all of which cause kitties to die.

Cats with histories of inappropriate urination don’t typically do well in animal shelters. In all likelihood, a cat who pees outside the box will eventually be euthanized for that reason, or turned outside where he will live in fear until he dies a traumatic death, because someone was grossed out by the concept of presenting the kitty with a more obvious box of sand.
